Rogério Manuel dos Santos Simões completed a degree in Chemical Engineering at the University of Coimbra (1984), took a specialization course in Paper Engineering at the Escola Superior d’Enginyeries Industrial de Terrassa, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (1987), and completed a PhD in Paper Engineering at the University of Beira Interior (UBI), in 1997. He has been an Associate Professor at the Department of Chemistry at UBI since 2001, developing teaching and research activities.
At the teaching level, he taught several curricular units in the Bachelors and Master’s Degree in Chemical Engineering, Industrial Chemistry, Paper Engineering, Engineering of Pulp Production Processes for Paper (University of Coimbra, University of Aveiro and University of Beira Interior), in areas of engineering of bio/chemical reactions, transfer and project phenomena, in addition to the processes and technology of production of pulp for paper. In the area of research, he deepens and applies his knowledge of reaction engineering and transfer phenomena in wood cooking and pulp bleaching processes, including enzymatic processes, as well as to aerobic reactors for treating industrial effluents. In the area of cellulosic materials, his main research interests focus on the relationships between the morphological characteristics of fibers (including cellulose nanofibrils), processing conditions and the corresponding properties of the final products (paper, cellulosic films, cellulosic filaments, etc.).
He was coordinator of the area of Chemistry of Fibrous Materials, at the Research Unit FibEnTech-UBI.
Rogério Manuel dos Santos Simões was/is scientific supervisor/co-supervisor of 8 PhD students and several Masters students in Engineering of Paper Pulp Production Processes (University of Coimbra, University of Aveiro and University of Beira Interior), Industrial Chemistry and Biotechnology. He is also the author/co-author of 60 scientific papers.
