Arlindo Caniço Gomes holds a degree in Biotechnology from FCT/UNL and a PhD in Chemistry from UBI and is currently an auxiliary professor at the Department of Chemistry at UBI and a member of the FibEnTech research unit. Research activities have included the treatment and recovery of industrial wastewater, such as that discharged by the textile industry in the dyeing operation, through membrane technologies, chemical oxidation, and biological treatment.
Since 2009, following a project financed by the FCT, he has focused predominantly on the issue of effluents from the initial stage of industrial cork processing – cooking. In addition to assessing the biodegradability and toxicity of cork cooking water, analytical methodologies were developed to quantify phenolic compounds. Scrubber options included the integration of nanofiltration, chemical oxidation (electrochemical and ozone) with macrophyte ponds.
