The research unit came up from the interaction between the former Textile and Paper Materials unit (MTP) and other research groups, from UBI and Polytechnic Institute of Beja, which allows sharing resources, namely equipment and human resources, for the development of R&D projects of mutual interest.

The fibentech research unit aims to develop fundamental and applied research to contribute to the development of fibrous materials, structured and composites, with applications in the areas of textiles, paper and packaging, health and welfare, automotive, among others, using mainly renewable raw materials through innovative and energy-based and environmentally sustainable processes and technologies. The analysis of the sustainability of new products and processes, as well as the recovery and treatment of solid wastes, such as textile (post-consumer) and forest wastes, gaseous and liquid effluents from the processes, under a perspective of the circular economy, is one of the priorities of the unit, integrating in this way the two research groups: Fibrous Materials and Environmental Technologies. Another priority will be to develop technologies and products that create value and promote carbon sequestration. The RU comprises groups of Fiber Materials and Environmental Technologies, working in both specific and common activities, including energy intensity, water consumption and environmental impacts of processes and products.
